Sunday – Bath, England. 2,000 years old and still kicking

We hopped on British Rail from Paddington Station. (Think: Paddington Bear’s home.)

Bath is home to England’s only hot springs. In his Frommer’s guide, it said we could bath in them ourselves, and get massages. Thinking I was in for another treat like the Turkish Bath in Paris, we set out to find it.

After walking around forever in this sketchy part of Bath, (or dodgy as the Brits say,) we found the bath house. Only, we learned that it’s four years behind schedule (pronounced shed-yule by the Brits.)

The Romans sat their heineys here 2,000 years ago! Today, the public can only look at it, and drink the water, which is served in cups two floors above. I heard it tastes disgusting and there’s no way I’m drinking that stuff. People bathed in it! Sure it was hundreds of years ago, but, yuck.

And here’s John and I after not drinking the water like the other tourists.

Then we had traditional English afternoon tea with “bread thingies” and clotted cream. (Clotted cream is like a mixture of butter and cream, pure fat and oh so delicious.)

I told my co-worker about the English tea on Monday, and I said “bread thingies with clotted cream and jelly” and she laughed and said, “You mean scones and jam?” That’s what I meant.
